Icon Design: Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre

Overview:

The Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre (EORC) provides a variety of social services to local constituents of all walks of life. EORC services fall under 5 broad categories:

  • Resources and Referrals
  • Programs Against Violence
  • Services for Seniors and Adults with a Disability
  • Child and Youth Services
  • Community Development.

The challenge:

Given the pre-existing logo for the organization, create a series of 5 icons representing these five categories. Assign each new icon a distinct colour based on the pre-existing colour scheme.

Process:

We decided to relate the icons to the original logo through the use of the “dancing people” motif. First a number of sketches were produced to demonstrate how the figures could show concepts such as empowerment, support, collaboration, etc. This led to a period of consultation with the client to identify themes and points of emphasis for each department, after which the final sketches were created and refined. Once the final monochrome images were approved, the icons were stylized and assigned colours.
